Joseph Phelps cabernet sauvignon 1998. USA, California. Chock-full of ripe berry flavour. Major man.
Quinta da Carmo 1998. Portugal. Firm but balanced. Ch. Lafite investment quality.
Nebbiolo d’Alba “Valmaggiore” 2000. (Sandrone) Italy, Piedmont. New-style star. More fruit, less oak.
Barolo Cannubi Boschis 1997. (E. Pira) Italy, Piedmont. Posh vineyard, posh grower, mega year.
Guidalberto 2000. (Tenuta San Guido) Italy, Tuscany. Soft red, merlot/cabernet/sangiovese. First new top-flight wine here since Sassicaia.
Santa Cecilia 1997. (Planeta) Sicily. Nero d’Avolo. Distinct red berry character, with a hint of oak. Very attractive firm finish.
Bandol 2000. (Tempier) Provence. Solid and luscious at the same time. Yum!
Gigondas 1999. (Guigal) S. Rhône. Deceptively smooth with a peppered richness.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Clos St. Jean 1997. 1998 HALF: S. Rhône. Typically big meaty, alcoholic red.
Crozes-Hermitage 2002. (Graillot) N. Rhône. Best grower in Crozes. Meaty syrah (shiraz).
Cornas 1996. (Clape) 48.00 N. Rhône. Stylish A1 syrah, shows fruit but not new-worldy.
